A 4-day trip to Kedarnath from Rishikesh or Haridwar

A 4-day trip to Shri Kedarnath Jyotirlinga Temple is the standard duration for pilgrims traveling from Rishikesh or Haridwar. This timeframe allows for necessary road travel through the mountains and a dedicated day for the 16–18 km trek.

Quick Planning Essentials

Mandatory Registration: All pilgrims must register on the official Uttarakhand Tourism portal to receive a QR-coded Yatra Pass. This is checked at Sonprayag

Best Time: May to June and September to October.

Physical Prep: The trek is moderate to difficult due to the high altitude (11,750 ft). A basic medical fitness check is highly recommended.

Day 1: The Mountain Drive

Your journey begins with a scenic but long drive (approx. 7–9 hours) from Rishikesh or Haridwar toward the base camps.

  • Route: Travel alongside the Ganges, Alaknanda, and Mandakini rivers, passing through holy confluences like Devprayag and Rudraprayag

  • Stay in Guptkahsi: Most travelers stop here or in nearby Sersi/Phata.

  • Visit the ancient Shree Kashi Vishwanath Temple Guptkashi in the evening to seek blessings before your trek.

  •  Prepare your day pack with essentials like a poncho, warm layers, and dry fruits.

Day 2: The Ascent to Kedarnath

This is the most physically demanding day, involving the trek to the shrine.

  • Morning Logistics: Drive to Sonprayag, then take a local shuttle jeep to Gaurikund, the official trek starting point.

  • The Trek: A 16–18 km uphill climb. You can choose to walk or hire a pony/palki.

  • Evening Darshan: Reach Shri Kedarnath Jyotirlinga Temple by late afternoon. Attend the evening Aarti for a deeply spiritual experience as the temple is illuminated against the Himalayan peaks.

  • Stay: Overnight at Kedarnath in a guest house or GMVN camp.

Day 3: Morning Prayers and Descent

  • Early Darshan: Wake up at 4:00 AM for the morning Darshan (Abhishek Puja). This is often the best time for a peaceful visit to the inner sanctum.

  • Explore: Visit the nearby Bhairav Nath Temple for a panoramic view of the valley and the "Bhim Shila"—the massive rock that protected the temple during the 2013 floods.

  • Return Trek: Start your descent back to Gaurikund after breakfast. The downhill walk is faster but can be hard on the knees.

  • Stay: Take a shuttle back to Sonprayag and stay overnight in Guptkashi or a nearby resort to rest your muscles.

Day 4: Return Journey

  • Departure: After an early breakfast, begin the drive back to Rishikesh or Haridwar.

  • Sightseeing: If time permits, stop at the Dhari Devi Temple or enjoy a quiet moment by the river at one of the prayags.

  • Conclusion: Reach your destination by evening (approx. 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM).
