Famous Places in Jajpur

Jajpur, an ancient district in Odisha, is a treasure trove of historical, religious, and cultural sites. It's particularly renowned for its rich Buddhist heritage and ancient Hindu temples. Here's a breakdown of the key tourist places in Jajpur:

1. Buddhist Sites (The Diamond Triangle): Jajpur is a crucial part of Odisha's "Diamond Triangle" of Buddhist sites, which also includes Lalitgiri (in Cuttack district). These sites were once thriving centers of Buddhist learning and monastic life.

  • Ratnagiri: This is one of the most prominent Buddhist sites, famous for its grand monastery ruins, intricate sculptures, and numerous stupas. It's believed to have been a significant center for Vajrayana Buddhism. The doorway of the main monastery is particularly noteworthy for its exquisite carvings. There's also an archaeological museum at Ratnagiri.

  • Udayagiri: The largest and least excavated site of the Diamond Triangle. It features impressive ruins of two monasteries, a large stupa, and a wealth of Buddhist sculptures. The hilltop offers beautiful panoramic views.

  • Langudi Hills (Pushpagiri Vihara): This significant Buddhist site dates back to the 3rd century BCE, predating Ratnagiri and Udayagiri. Excavations here have unearthed rock-cut stupas, a monastery, and many sculptures of Buddha and other deities. It's believed to be the "Pushpagiri" mentioned by the Chinese traveler Hiuen Tsang.

2. Hindu Temples:

  • Biraja Temple (Biraja Kshetra / Viraja Peetha): This is the most important religious site in Jajpur. It's one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, where it's believed that the navel of Goddess Sati fell. Goddess Durga is worshipped here as Maa Biraja. The temple complex is vast and houses several smaller shrines. It's a major pilgrimage center.

  • Dashashwamedha Ghata: Situated on the banks of the sacred Baitarani River, this ghat is significant for Hindu rituals, especially for offering oblations to ancestors. The evening aarti (light ceremony) is a beautiful sight. Nearby are the Saptamatruka Temple (dedicated to the seven mother goddesses) and other smaller temples.

  • Mahavinayak Temple, Chandikhol: Located near Chandikhol, this ancient temple is unique as it worships "Pancha Devata" (five deities – Shiva, Vishnu, Durga, Sun, and Ganapati) as a single deity in one sanctum.

  • Chhatia Bata Jagannath Temple: A revered Jagannath temple in Chhatia, believed to be the second "Shreekeshtra" of Odisha.

  • Barahanatha Temple: Dedicated to Lord Vishnu's Varaha (boar) incarnation, this temple is located across the Baitarani River from Jajpur town.

  • Siddheswar Temple: Another ancient Hindu temple in Jajpur.

  • Gokarneswar Temple: Located on the banks of the Brahmani river, it is believed that the Pandavas visited this temple to pay homage to their ancestors.

  • Chandikhole Chandi Temple: A temple dedicated to Goddess Chandi near Chandikhol.

3. Natural & Scenic Spots:

  • Ashokjhar Waterfall: A picturesque waterfall located in the Sukinda Block, offering a serene environment.

  • Kusuma Pond & Park: A beautifully renovated pond and park near Jajpur town, adorned with a variety of flowers. It's a popular spot for relaxation.

  • Neulpur Hill Top: Offers scenic views and is a popular picnic spot.

  • Gangi Hill & Cave: Located near the Lalitgiri Buddhist Complex, this hill has three caves and is known for its serene atmosphere, believed to have been a meditation spot for saints.

  • Olasuni Hill & Temple / Cave: Situated near Chandikhol, it features a temple and a cave, important for devotees of Santha Arakhit Das.

4. Handicrafts & Culture:

  • Gopalpur (Tussar Silk Weaving): Jajpur is known for its traditional crafts. Gopalpur village holds a GI tag for its Tussar silk weaving, where you can see the intricate process of hand-weaving.

  • Antia Village (Golden Grass Weaving): Discover the unique craft of golden grass weaving in Antia village, where utilitarian products like baskets and coasters are made from local golden grass.

Jajpur offers a blend of spiritual solace, historical exploration, and cultural immersion, making it a compelling destination for tourists interested in Odisha's rich heritage.
